I was scrolling Facebook Marketplace when I saw an old bed with the title “Solid Maple.” I immediately messaged the woman and asked if it was still available. She informed me that it was broken and she had not gotten any interest in it so she put it out for trash and I was welcome to come get it before it got picked up. At the time, I had no idea what I was going to make with it, but I wasn’t going to let solid maple go to waste. I sent my husband for it and it sat in my basement for over a year before I touched it.
Randomly, the idea of turning that old bed into a side table popped into my head. I love the look of natural maple complimented by the color black so I headed over to Home Depot and grabbed some 2×2 for the legs and 1×3 for the skirting as well as a quart of black paint.
I cut the 1×3 table skirting to allow about an inch of the top of the table to overhang. Using my kreg pocket hole jig, I attached the 1×3 skirting to the 2×2 legs and the top of the table as well.
By the time I was finished, I was into this project for just about $50 including my gas to go pick up the table. I listed it on Facebook Marketplace on a whim for $400 and it sold in less than a day. It took me about 6 hours to put this entire table together start to finish. It was a great payday with a fast turn around. If you see solid wood for free – don’t pass it up. Even if its broken!!! You can always repurpose something.
